When Software Development Becomes More Than Software Development
This article is not directly about software development, but it is deeply connected to it. If you keep reading, you’ll understand why.
In late 2004, a traffic accident caused a spinal cord injury that left me in a critical situation. The impact was not only physical and emotional; it also left me feeling lost, as the dreams I had about what I would become one day suddenly disappeared.
A year and a half later, with very limited mobility in my arms, I had my first contact with web development: HTML, CSS, and PHP. It took me five minutes to write a single line of code. Back then, autocomplete did not even exist.
Over the years, after many hours of daily rehabilitation, things gradually improved to the point where something once unimaginable became real: I could become a software developer.
That is when software development became more than just a way to make a living. It became a true passion.
For the first time, the results of my work, my way of thinking, and my knowledge could be evaluated, accepted, challenged, or rejected without my physical condition being part of the equation. It is a field where I do not need physical assistance from anyone, and where the limitations I face are not defined by reduced mobility.
Little by little, AI-powered tools began to remove the last major barrier: speed. They did not replace the effort, the learning, or the passion, but they helped close the gap between what I wanted to build and the time it took me to build it. Time will tell how far AI will take us.
For that reason, among many others: thank you, software development.
